Linking words help you to connect ideas and sentences, so that people can follow your ideas.  :)

I think it might be the best way to do is to read alot in order to improve ur english skills, for example by reading you will know which verb, linking words etc you should use in the case that you'll face it in ur sentance.

I think linking words and sign-posting words put your essay marks up  :)

So it is very helpful to know lots of linking words such as therefore, however, on the other hand,

nevertheless, hence , on the contrary and so forth.

However I sometimes get confused by the slight nuance differences between however and neverthe less

or hence and thus....
