It may not be the best, but it is the most international. What do you think are the most difficult aspects of English?

Let's be positive here. articles certainly are difficult, probably the most difficult area of English grammar. However, there is very little meaning in the use of articles - people will always understand you even if they are wrong.

As for  idioms and phrasal verbs, one of the good things about academic writing is that it is best to avoid phrasal verbs and idioms. Useful for every day colloquial English certainly, but you can get them all wrong and still do excellently in your degree
 :D

Articles are very difficult for me,too :-\

I think the most difficult thing about Polish is its cases and tenses :P

I don't know if English is the best. I think that depends in what sense

you mean 'the best' such as sound or number of vocab and so forth.

If we were choosing an international language the 'best' would be the easiest to learn, something like Esperanto (the artificial language) but for historical/political reasons we are stuck with English.

Hey Mateusz, Miku speaks a bit of Polish and she says it's much more difficult to learn than English. Do you think that's true?

My question was just to provoke a discussion :-) I dont think the English is the best language, is quiet easy to learn, and after a very short time of studing you can speak it. But very similar thing happens with Spanish, the easiest romance language, a lot of erasmus student coming to Spain speak it after 4-5 months!

Of cours, it doesnt happen with Polish language. The Polish grammar is almost as complicated as latin grammar, in fact, the knowledge of latin helps a lot to understand the cases (and if you know Polish it helps you to study latin, of course).

One of the most interesting things in Polish langugage is that we do conjugate the names! For example:

Spotka?em wczoraj Willama

what means

I met William yesterday.

:-)

I will continue...

I know it's quite interesting how name changes in polish( po polsku).

such as Drugi Pan Piotrze,Droga Pani Grazyno albo u Piotra:

which means Dear sir Piotr,Dear miss Grazyna or in Piotr's house

Family names are treated and differ as adjectives for example..kieslowski'ego'.

Place name as well... for instance w Warszawie i do Warszawy:

which means in Warsaw and to Warsaw.

TO BARDO TRUDNO ;D

Miku, I am really surprised about your polish! You long have you been studied it?

Russian language is still very useful, as it is spoken in a lof of country, and Rusia still has an imperial aspiration, so very often it is better to speak rusian in Ukraine.
The russian language is beautifull, always when I am watching the russian cinema I really enjoy it. Of course, all slavic langugages, as russian or polish, hace quiete complicated grammar, so if you understand and know it, it helps you to learn others languages.

I didn't study only Polish but also its culture, history and so forth in TUFS(Tokyo University of Foreign Studies).

I've been there fore half a year before my coming to UK.

Maybe it's easier to say ' Studiowa?am polonistyk?'  if it's correct.

Polish is one of the most difficult languages in the world for sure.

I think it's more difficult than Russian and even my ex-uni russian native professor said that as well.

In my opinion, English Language is the best languagge in the world. First of all, it is the most international language. Secondly,  compared with other languages, English is the easiest language for people to learn.

Hi Aurora,

Thanks for your comment.  Many people might disagree with you that English is the easiest language to learn, because the non-phonetic spelling often catches people out.

Jessica.

I think body language is the best language~  ;)

When you say 'YES' and you shake your head at the same time, people would rather believe it is a 'NO'.

Body language can express more than a spoken language does.

In my opinion i would say that no language is difficult until and unless it is your mother language.  :)

Maybe english is not the easiest language in the world, but day after day it's becoming the most common in the world.
